What is Discover?
Discover is an early exposure to graduate school and student success program that invites freshman, sophomore and junior participants to:
- examine graduate education opportunities and career trends by discipline
- discover the benefits of pursuing an advanced degree in their particular fields
- explore strategies for academic success both as an undergraduate and a graduate student
- and learn about paid summer research opportunities
The Discover Program originally prepared students for the McNair Scholars Program application process; a program that prepares talented eligible juniors and seniors for graduate studies through a series of activities during their paid research internship. It has now grown into so much more.
Additionally is it focuses on student success by offering students guidance on their personal, professional and academic self with student success coaches using AALD’s Ambassador’s and AALD’s Student Success Coaches.
Targeted Students?
Originally called the McNair Scholar Prep Program, the AALD Discover Program was developed as a recruitment pathway to McNair, thereby aligning with its eligibility standards. While the program’s core tenets are framed through the experiences of students from traditionally underserved backgrounds—particularly first-generation individuals—it is open to any MU undergraduate who is motivated to prepare for the pursuit of advanced degrees.
